Wosene has created his series of works since 1980 that focus on the written language of Amharic. In his first series, entitled GRAFFITI MAGIC (1980-87), the artist used Amharic symbols as a form of visual protest, drawing upon their conventional meanings in his work.Wosene's transformation of written symbols into visual imagery draws from, and responds to, his cultural heritage on multiple levels. He views his work as connected to the Ethiopian literary tradition of "wax and gold", a form of poetic verse.From this rich cultural legacy Wosene creates a unique visual vocabulary that is given shape by his broad knowledge of art history and international contemporary artistic practice.
